NYC Police Union Holds Historic Vote for Presidential Endorsement

DEA Members to Choose 2024 Presidential Candidate

The Detectives Endowment Association (DEA), one of New York City’s leading police unions, is taking an unprecedented step by asking its 18,000 members to vote on which presidential candidate to endorse for the 2024 election. This internal vote marks the first time the union has sought collective input from its members on such an important decision. Typically, the union’s leadership makes endorsement choices.

Importance of Member Opinions

DEA President Scott Munro emphasized the need to understand the membership's views before making any endorsement. In a letter to members, Munro stated, "It is incumbent upon our union leadership to understand how our membership feels before we endorse any candidate running for president — that is, if we ultimately decide to endorse anyone at all."

Strong Support for Trump Among Officers

Some officers believe the vote is unnecessary, convinced that the majority already favor former President Donald Trump. They see Trump as a strong supporter of law enforcement. One police source commented, "Polling doesn’t make sense to me if they’re just reaching for a statistic. We know Trump is for law enforcement."

Historical Context and Previous Endorsements

This move comes four years after the Police Benevolent Association (PBA), another prominent NYC police union, broke a long-standing tradition and endorsed Trump in the 2020 election. Although the DEA did not officially endorse Trump then, its leadership supported his law and order stance during the Black Lives Matter protests.

Diverse Membership and Voting Process

Munro highlighted the diversity within the DEA, saying, "Our membership is extremely diverse, our opinions may be extremely diverse. That’s why we want to hear from all our members, both active and inactive." The DEA’s vote will be conducted online from July 8 through August 8. Members can choose between Trump, President Joe Biden, or write in another candidate.

Impact of the Vote

The results of this historic vote will be significant, showing local, state, and national leaders where the DEA stands. Munro stated, "With the results of this poll, local, state and national leaders will know how we feel and what we intend to do in November."

Tradition of Union Leadership Guidance

While this internal vote is unusual, it is common for union leadership to guide members on voting choices. A police source noted, "The PBA would always send us an email recommending on who to vote for. I’ve been conditioned for guidance on major elections or elections that would benefit the NYPD."
